DLC Review: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax - Character DLC "Episode Adachi"

Warning: Spoilers for Persona 4/Persona 4 Golden are present in this review. Proceed at your own rist!

Confession time: this DLC is half the reason I was so keen for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax in the first place.

Have we all played Persona 4 to completion? I hope so. I'm sure I wasn't the only one wondering how Adachi would go in a prison (see, spoilers guys!). Episode Adachi has the answers in it's six chapter addition to Persona 4 Arena Ultimax's story mode. On top of that, it also gives you the cool, pistol whipping Adachi character to add to the already stellar cast of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax's roster of fighters.

Episode Adachi begins while he's in custody, giving a humourous insight into Adachi throwing some shade at police officers. More importantly, it puts some much needed time into explaining why he's in this story and not as far away from any TVs as possible. If Episode Adachi's main role was to give explanation into just how his role in the story is done, it succeeds throughly, with the best parts of Episode Adachi based in the first few chapters that cover this.

The bulk of Episode Adachi is hearing his perspective on Ultimax's events, giving a behind-the-scenes version of the story's events. Adachi's personality from Persona 4 is in fine form, with him throwing out a lot of 'What a pain' type phrases around and finding everything a big, annoying effort. If you're a fan of Adachi, you'll find enjoyment in spending more time with his humourous, but highly apathetic character. If you've been following the Persona 4 series and it's anime, this is story addition is the cherry on top of Adachi's character being explored more deeply in the anime, as the Persona 4 game only gave a small amount of development into his character, mostly at the end of the game.
The only small criticism I can really give Episode Adachi is it's middle section feeling a little repetitive at points when you compare it to the Persona 4 story episode of Ultimax. However, this is to be expected as the middle section isn't giving much new content, just Adachi's perspective.

The best part of Episode Adachi was it's epilogue, which left me feeling content with all loose ends of Adachi's story being fulfilled. The epilogue was a very fitting fate and probably the best possible outcome and development for Adachi.

If you're not a big fan of Adachi as a character, but a fan of the Persona 4 or the Persona 4 Arena series, this DLC may be a bit hit or miss for some people. It's not an essential part of the Ultimax's story but it helped the story feel that little bit more complete. I think if you count the fact you get Adachi's character for fighting, style opinions and a story selection for about $7 (Australian price) is a good deal and is certainly the best value character to buy if you're looking to expand your roster of fighters in the game as Marie and Margaret's DLCs don't have an additional story mode (side note: they are still fun to play as though!). The story campaign lasted me maybe an hour or so, depending on how fast of a reader you are.

Even though it's not a must have for all players of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Episode Adachi provides the final piece of the puzzle into his character development from Persona 4 and the anime and also an insight into some of the finer points of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. If you're a fan of him, a diehard Persona fan or just want another character to play with, Episode Adachi is the best value DLC character you can get and while isn't a huge story mode, is worth tying up the loose ends left at Persona 4.

Score: 7.8/10
Fun content and interesting story for those diehard fans of Persona and generally good value. The only DLC character with a story mode and goddammit, he comes with pistol whipping action. Not necessarily a must have for all players of the games though.

The Adachi Character DLC is available from your country's PSN store. Prices will vary depending on your country!

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Finally Gets A European Release!

Creeping up to the North American release date, it was looking like European Persona 4 Arena Ultimax fans may have to import the game if they wanted to play. But Sega has instead come to the rescue, announcing they will publish and release Persona 4 Arena Ultimax both physically and digitally in November for the European region, according to Eurogamer's post.

While the game isn't region locked in North America for any fans who don't want to wait till November, I'm sure this solves some importing costs and troubles for some people *raises hand*.

Meanwhile, North American fans can look forward to the game's release on September 30th for PS3 and Xbox 360, which can be pre-ordered via Amazon or Play-Asia.

European fans: Will you be waiting for the EU release or importing the game from the US?

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Rated By The Australian Classification Board - Could This Mean It's Coming To PAL Regions?

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax has been rated by the Australian Classification Board, suggesting that the game could come to Australia and possibly other PAL regions, including Europe. While no confirmation has been made by Atlus or Arc System Works, it would be rather strange to have a game classified if there were no intentions to release it. The rating can be viewed at the Australian Classification website (or here).

This wouldn't be the first time the Australian Classification Board has revealed an unannounced game. Atelier Rorona Plus was rated by the Board around a week before it was officially announced.

Even if this game doesn't get announced for PAL regions, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax can still be imported and pre-ordered by fans from these regions as the game has been announced as region free.

Pre-order for PS3 or Xbox 360 (in English): Amazon, Play-Asia
Pre-order for PS3 (in Japanese): Play-Asia

Margaret Has Been Confirmed As A Playable Character In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax + Official Release Date and New Japanese Trailers

After rumours surrounding a recent Persona 4 Arena Ultimax poster, Margaret has been confirmed as another playable character for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Players of Persona 4 will remember Margret as the game's Velvet Room resident, who will join her sister, Persona 3's Velvet Room resident Elizabeth in the Persona 4 Arena Ultimax character line-up. Margaret will be available in the game via DLC, though it has not yet been revealed whether she will be free in the first week like the Adachi and Marie DLC.

In the game, Margaret will use the Personas Yoshitsune, Cu Chulainn and Ardha in regular combat and her burst arrack will feature the Persona Lucifer. Here are some photos of Margret in action (courtesy of Famitsu):

Also in recent Persona 4 Arena Ultimax news, the release date for North America has been announced as September 30th. No European date has been announced, meaning that European fans may have to import the game this time around.

(Side note: I will be importing the game from Amazon and trying to get the DLC to work on an Australian Playstation. According to Google, this is possible so if I'm successful, I'll post an article here on how you guys can do it too!)

Finally, here are the latest character trailers from Japan featuring Akihiko, Aegis and Mitsuru.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Poster Changed To Feature Marie...And Margaret?

Source: Gematsu
Lucky Persona 4 Arena Ultimax fans in Japan not only got to attend a demo event in Shinjuku, Tokyo for the game, but also received a poster of the awesome cover artwork for the game. Some fans noted online that the artwork had been altered to now include the new playable character Marie in the top right corner and also Margaret (Persona 4's Velvet Room Resident) on the left. With all other characters on the poster being playable, fans are speculating that Margaret may also become a playable character.

Marie Will Be A Playable Character In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Marie in the recent first episode of Persona 4 the Golden Animation
There's a lot to smile about for fans of Persona 4 Golden's character Marie recently. Along with her appearance on Persona 4 the Golden Animation, it has also been announced that Marie will feature in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax as a playable character. Unlike the Adachi DLC, Marie will not come with the game and will instead be released as paid DLC for the game.

Her tagline for the game (as translated by Gematsu) is "Hollow Forest Tsundere Poet".

Marie's fighting style will be using melee attacks and will involve using items from her bag. Her Persona will be Kaguya, which is the Persona you can obtain by maxing out Marie's Social Link in Persona 4 Golden.

A brief look at the new Lobby feature from the game's most recent trailer.
The announcement of Marie also included some details on the lobby feature which was very briefly shown in the recent Persona 4 Arena Ultimax trailer. Lobby is included in the game's online mode and will allow players to battle and chat with other players. It will also allow players to explore some of the game's locations, such as Junes and the school.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is due for release in Fall in the US (region-free this time!) on PS3 and Xbox360. The game will be released in Japan on PS3 August 28th.

Pre-order the English version from the US: Amazon, Play-Asia
Pre-order the Japanese version from Japan: Play-Asia

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Will Be Region Free This Time! + New screenshots

Atlus have announced via Twitter that the North and South American release of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be region free.
Both the Playstation and the Xbox version will be region free, which means regions such as Europe that are not receiving an official release of the game can still import their copy worry-free from the U.S. or Japan.

Fans of the game may remember the region-locking of Persona 4 Arena. Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 games are mostly always region free, in fact with Persona 4 Arena being the only known game to be region locked on PS3. Persona 4 Arena was region locked due to the variance between the U.S. dollar and Japanese yen currency values at that time. Because after currency conversion when importing the U.S. version of the game turned out to be cheaper than the Japanese one, Atlus were worried that mass importing from the U.S. would affect the game's sales in certain regions.

Atlus also revealed that the U.S. release of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will receive the same cover art as the Japanese release. Sounds like some good decisions all round!

Here are two new screenshots from the U.S. localisation of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax:

Photos found on Gematsu
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be available August 28th 2014 in Japan and Fall 2014 in the U.S.. If you pre-order or buy the first print edition you will receive (along with the game) a mini Teddie Bop Bag, the first set of the Persona Tarot Cards (the second set will come with Persona Q) and the Adachi character DLC. You can pre-order your copy below:

Epic New Promo Video For Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Instead of the usual short character trailers, this week Atlustube is showing off a nearly three minute promo video of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. The promo video is a good summary of what we've been shown from the game so far, plus includes some new footage. Some of this footage includes flashes of game play and shows features such as Golden Arena, Score Attack, Lobby and Gallery Modes that we can expect to see in the game.

The trailer also shows a couple of new screenshots from the Adachi DLC, including this intriguing one:

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax News: Naoto and Kanji trailers + Adachi DLC Free On Launch Week

Because when you get an email from Atlus saying "Egocentric Police Dick", you know it's gonna be good.
The amount of hyping and news Atlus is giving for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is getting me ridiculously hyped for this release. Along with the weekly character trailers, it was revealed that the Tohru Adachi chapter DLC will be available for free the first week of the game's launch in the US. Anyone with pre-orders shouldn't fret - the DLC will be included with their order.

I hope a European release gets announced so us Australian and European gamers can enjoy the DLC too! (As you may or may not know, DLC is locked by region)

This week's character trailers are Naoto Shirogane and Kanji Tatsumi. I see what you did Atlus, putting Naoto and Kanji together!

More Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Trailer Goodness! This Time It's Chie and Shadow Labrys

Atlustube seems to be treating us to weekly Persona trailers, so this time around we have Chie and Shadow Labrys' trailers to enjoy and excite us. My favourite part? My low Japanese level managed to notice that the first word in Chie's trailer is 'meat'.

Chie Satonaka

Both are offering pre-order bonuses including part 1 of the Persona Tarot Cards and a mini Teddie punching bag.

Review - Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend (PS Vita)

Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend may be two years old and have a sequel, but there's nothing dated about this 'everything but the kitchen sink' fighting game by Arc System Works. For both fighting game masters and casual fighter fans, Continuum Shift Extend packs not only a brilliant and complicated fighting game into a little cartridge, it manages to also introduce a killer, console sized story for on-the-go gamers. The best way I can sum up my experience with Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend? I came for the slick fighting game and stayed for the intricate story.

For those new to Blazblue and Arc System Works fighting games, Blazblue is a 2D anime fighter that stays true to the 'easy to play, difficult to master' arcade terminology that you might have heard of. If you enjoy fighting games just for fun and aren't interested in combos, you'll enjoy Blazblue, particularly in Stylish Mode which allows your to perform powerful combos by holding down a single button. Fans of the technicality will be beyond pleased by the variety of characters and the variety of combos available. The diverse roster of characters gives something to everyone who plays Blazblue - for example, characters like Hakuman, Platinum the Trinity and Ragna the Bloodedge all provide completely different ways to play and different combos and finishing moves to master. All characters have different weapons and even species types help give all the characters a vastly unique style. My favourite character in the game's story was Makoto and her fast, fist based style was cool but I was much more inclined to play as Noel because using her guns were a lot more fun. I like that this is how I felt inclined to play, as most other fighting games I just end up playing as my favourite character.

Personally, my only problem with playing this stellar fighting game was my beloved PS Vita. The controls of the Vita are significantly smaller than a PS3 controller and I just couldn't use the D-Pad or the Analog stick efficiently and precisely enough to do some of the harder combos and even something simple like getting my character to 'dash' to the other side of the screen was hard. I'd like to give my Vita the benefit of the doubt as I never have been (and probably never will be) a remarkably skilled fighting game player however from doing a little Google search, I found that there are other players with this issue. The game was originally a PS3 game, so after my good experience with Continuum Shift Extend on Vita, it does make me wonder if I could have a great experience playing it on PS3 instead.

If Blazblue's fighting game mechanics weren't deep enough, prepare for a long, intricate story, complete with anime cutscenes and lots of dialogue. There are 18 character stories, true ending, bonus content and the prequel Blazblue Calamity Trigger's story remastered. It is a huge story to get through, especially if you're looking to unlock the true ending. I spent many train rides trying to do this and discovering all the heroic and colourful characters of the Blazblue universe. Each character's story is told from their point of view so a serious story such as Jin Kisaragi's will constrast heavily with Taokaka's more humourous approach based purely on their personality. Each individual story provides plot choices for the player much and in the game's brilliance, will provide different endings dependent on this including hilarious gag reels and bad endings. It reminded me of a visual novel, but with fights. The length of each characters story was usually around half an hour to an hour in length, which I think is rather admirable when compared to other fighting games.

For players new to the Blazblue series, I highly recommend taking advantage of the included remastered Calamity Trigger story. It really helped fill in some of the gaps in the new story of Continuum Shift and various characters' individual stories. For those who have already played Calamity Trigger, you can look forward to a remastered version of the story you remember.

On the topic of story mode, Continuum Shift Extend's soundtrack really packs a punch and heightens epic scenes with it's combination of heavy rock and atmospheric music. What I didn't appreciate from the game's sound was it's tendency to turn up the music to double the volume (and consequently turn down the voiced dialogue) whenever I unlocked my Vita or while doing something simple like viewing the time on my Vita and then re-entering the game's app. The music would only put itself back to a normal volume (and turn the dialogue up to a normal sound level again) at the next 'looping' of whichever song was featured in the scene. This isn't a huge game-breaking issue and doesn't effect the overall feeling of positivity I have for the game, but it's a two year old game. I don't understand why a patch hasn't been released for this as I'm not the only one with this problem.

See this screenshot I took? The volume turned up after.
Along with story mode and arcade mode, Blazblue also features some unique fighting gameplay modes of it's own. Along with your typical versus, score game and network features, it features Unlimited Mars, Challenge and Abyss. Unlimited Mars is a mode where you fight characters that are controlled from a ridiculously hard A.I. that is a challenge for players of all skill levels (I had no success playing that mode). Challenge is basically a training mini game that challenges you to perform various combo sequences. Abyss was my favourite of Blazblue's unique fighting modes: You progress through difficulty levels and have the option of using your in game points to buy special attacks and stat boosts for whichever character you choose. It also doesn't fully heal you every battle, so you have to think about how you'll use your points - whether you'll need them on healing or can afford the luxury of a stat boost to get you through some of the harder levels.

While I do think I would have a better experience on the home console edition, Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend fits a mammoth experience onto the PS Vita that would be worthwhile to any fighting game fan on the go. If you like fun characters, an epic story and a solid and fun fighting game, your PS Vita needs Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend.

Score: 8/10
Played on and off over the last year and properly dedicated myself to it's story mode for a month.

Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend is available now at Play-Asia.com.

Please note: I have not played the other Blazblue titles such as Calamity Trigger or the more recent Chrono Phantasma, but my playthrough of Continuum Shift was enjoyable enough to make me want to. If playing Calamity Trigger ever alters my opinion on Continuum Shift, I will update this review.

Atlus Gives Us Trailers For Yu Narukami and Tohru Adachi For Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

Keep those trailers coming, Atlus! With Persona 4 Arena Ultimax's Japan August release creeping up, we are treated to two more character trailers - this time for Yu Narukami and Tohru Adachi.

These trailers are both in Japanese, but Yu's shadow saying 'Nanako' at the end of his trailer totally sent a couple of shivers up my spine.

I love how they mention cabbages in Adachi's trailer. Brilliant.

If (like me) and you're waiting for the localisation, you can pre-order Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and get extra goodies (more information about it's contents here, but it comes with a mini Teddie Punching Bag - you probably want it.) from Amazon. If you want the Japanese version, you can pre-order that from Play-Asia.

23/5/14 - J-RPG Jungle's weekly trailer round up! Akiba's Trip 2, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and more!

Hello there!

Each week many awesome game trailers and videos are released. For the sake of simplicity, every Friday I put the ones I think you should know about in this weekly round up post.

This week was a little quiet on the JRPG news and videos front. That's okay - E3 2014 is fast approaching and well, E3 always has something magical up it's sleeve!

In no particular order, here are the JRPG videos from this week:

A look at some of the playable characters in Akiba's Trip 2. It also gives a good look at the explorable, open world of Akibahara. I'm super excited for that and the last girl's socks!

Note: The original game is coming out west on PS3 and Vita as Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed!

I knew nothing about this game when I saw this, but it involves solving cases and it looks kinda cool! You might recognise the name from Hamatora: the Animation but the game tells a different story, so you won't need to have seen the anime to understand the game. The trailer shows off the combat, including the throwing of a giant cake.

Drakengard 3 (PS3)
Interview with the Creative Director on the Philosophies of Violence in Video Games

This game hasn't had rave reviews, but this interview has made me intrigued about Drakengard 3. The Creative Director speaks about how today's 'violence in video games' helped inspire Drakengard 3's story. He also does this with a sock puppet.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (PS3/X360)
Sho Minazuki Trailer

A trailer for the mysterious new character in the Persona 4 Arena series, Sho Minazuki. I'm very intrigued to find out his role in the story, but for now I'll settle for watching him fight with dual swords.

You can pre-order all of these games from Play-Asia.com :)

I swear I mentioned a couple of weeks ago I was bummed that I couldn't find Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma anywhere in Australia (I couldn't find the post...but I remember typing it somewhere!). Well, I'm a little late to the party here, but Blazblue: Chrono Phantasma was put on PSN for us all to enjoy as of last week!

And on topic: How amazing is the promo poster?!

This is the third installment of the Blazblue series. So far the game is on PS3, but it is due out on PS Vita as well in June in the US. The PS Vita games are region free, so if you want to wait for the Vita version, you can pre-order on Play Asia.

If you're not familiar with the world of BlazBlue, BlazBlue is a 2D fighter game, with fighting mechanics by Arc System works. I've always felt the games fit very well with the philosophy of arcade games: easy to play, but difficult to master. Each character has different combos and special abilities, so you can spend a lot of time getting good at different characters. If that seems like too much, don't worry, I barely know any combos and the game is still fun. The game also has a big story mode (although I've heard it's a little smaller in Chrono Phantasma) with a complicated story line spanning over multiple time lines.

Anyone else planning to pick this up? I'm still on my PS3 game ban till Australian Spring, but I may get it on Vita considering I'm really enjoying Continuum Shift right now. The story mode is probably the most in-depth I've experienced (even more than Persona 4 Arena) and I still haven't looked at everything else on the menu. I love the Visual Novel feeling of the story. It's just good.
