Review: World of Final Fantasy Maxima (Played on Switch, also on Xbox One, and PS4 and PC as DLC)

World of Final Fantasy was and still is a great journey. With its light-hearted monster collecting that evolves into an emotional big story that made me both laugh and cry, its story and gameplay is just as captivating to play years after its initial release. The game is full of many nods to the main Final Fantasy series games with its roster of familiar characters that you can now battle as in the new Maxima edition, on top of its interesting original mechanics like its size and stacking ones that are fun to play with all together, even if the frame rate wasn’t always perfect outside of docked mode. Years later, World of Final Fantasy in its updated Maxima form is still a story worth experiencing for fans of Final Fantasy who don’t mind a light-hearted story and for those who like the idea of exploring its unique, fun take on the Final Fantasy universe that now has even more to offer.

JRPGs I Played in October 2018

Thanks to some great new releases, I really enjoyed my JRPG time in October. I was finally able to try The World Ends With You thanks to its Switch release and in the spirit of enjoying games on the go, I also took the time to continue playing other games I’ve been enjoying such as Torna, the Golden Country and started Dragalia Lost so I can have a portable to play on my smartphone too. So with those, two platinum trophies and some new games I was finally able to try, here are the JRPGs I Played in October.

Review: Torna, the Golden Country - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (Nintendo Switch, DLC/Standalone)

Whether you want to think of it as DLC or as a standalone game, Torna, the Golden Country captures some of the best parts of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in a small, but still content packed form. Its prequel story to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 serves well as both as something that gives more insight into the world and history of it, but also as its own complete story, featuring its own new characters alongside ones that had development that helps me properly understand them as characters. Beyond that, Torna, the Golden Country also boasts the great quests and blade development systems that made the original game so addictive and the way some of these quests tie into the story and character development made doing them feel very rewarding and the world richer for it. As an expansion on an already great world, Torna, the Golden Country feels like more than just DLC with its 20 hour story campaign and with plenty left to do after, it’s a perfect addition to enrich Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s world while standing more than well enough on its own.

JRPGs I Played in August 2018

As expected, August was a pretty free month for JRPGs. I didn’t pick up any new releases, although I did manage to find the time to try newer experiences in demo form and left each one feeling fairly positive. I also kept true on my promise of playing Persona 2, found a new IP I’m super excited to learn more about and rearranged my gaming time a little to help me enjoy JRPGs even more and as much as possible going forward. While August wasn’t full of releases, I had no shortage of things to play in my JRPG time, so here are all the JRPGs I played in August.

Lost Dimension

New releases! Three of them! After a pretty quiet last week on PSN, Lost Dimension, Onechanbara Z2 and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 grace the store with quirky Japanese game goodness. I've had my eye on Onechanbara since Kotaku posted about some of it's funny English lines and it just seems like an action packed, completely inappropriate game that I want to play when I need a good laugh. Another game I'm interested in is Lost Dimension, a new Atlus RPG that combines elements from popular, recent Japanese games into it's own tactical experience and I love a good whodunit, so I'm hoping it's enjoyable. All of these games also boast a bunch of DLC and to top off a good week, Crunchyroll has made it's way to the PSN internationally. Good week is good.

For JRPG fans who also are fans of anime, Crunchyroll is now available on the PSN App store internationally (finally!) on PS4, PS3 and PS Vita for free. Using the free membership from Crunchyroll, you can watch a huge selection of anime directly on your Playstation device (which will be especially awesome on Vita I bet).

For fans of HD streaming, simulcasts and ad-free viewing, you can go to Crunchyroll's website and purchase a monthly subscription that will give you all those things and more. My boyfriend and I used the subscription back in Australia (at the time with Chromecast) and I loved being able to watch titles like Persona 4 Golden the Animation and Sailor Moon Crystal right as they came out fully translated. Couldn't have watched or reviewed the first few episodes of the P4G Animation without it, so I highly recommend it.

This Week's PSN EU/AU PSN Releases, JRPG Style! (27/8/15)

Why hello! Welcome to this week's edition of Europe and Australia's new PSN releases, which pulls each week's PSN additions related to the JRPG genre and other Japanese games into one post for your convenience.

Now that the Winter Sale is over on the Australian/European PSN store, it feels like something is missing this week - JRPGs. The PSN seems generally quiet this week, but if you enjoy otome visual novels, the game Amnesia: Memories is out for PS Vita and has an interesting sounding story about a girl who awakens without her memory one morning, with the only clue to her past being her cell phone. Other than that, there's a deal for Toukiden and some Yu-Gi-Oh! DLC and not much else, meaning I'll be continuing to grind to beat the final boss in Final Fantasy IX.

This Week's PSN EU/AU PSN Releases, JRPG Style! (1/8/15)

This week's new Japanese game release is Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist. In case you were thinking 'But this isn't a JRPG!', I thought that the game would may be relevant due to the card game mini games featured in JRPGs....also cause I really liked the Yu-Gi-Oh PS One game what I was younger.
However, there are a few other JRPG things to talk about, mainly from the Winter Sale. The Winter Sales includes a few action based Japanese games, such as Hyperdimension Neptunia Action U, Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign- and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and also a few new story based games such as Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy and Hatoful Boyfriend. I considered buying Guilty Gear or Operation Abyss, but I couldn't justify it until I've finished Final Fantasy IX. I have played the Jojo's Bizzare Adventure: All-Star Battle fighting game a little though - the combat is enjoyable, though maybe not as smooth as an Arc System Works fighter. I would still recommend it for anyone who enjoy's the show though - the animations and gameplay are fun enough.

This Week's PSN EU/AU PSN Releases, JRPG Style! (2/7/15)

Why hello! Welcome to this week's edition of Europe and Australia's new PSN releases, which pulls each week's PSN additions related to the JRPG genre and other Japanese games into one post for your convenience.

This week we see two releases hitting the PSN in their localised forms. First is Ar nosurge Plus, the enhanced PS Vita version of the PS3 game Ar nosurge that was released (and I reviewed) last year that boasts extra content and DLC for those who didn't play the game and for those who loved it. Second is the cool Japanese fighting game J-Stars Victory VS+ which features a ridiculous cast of characters from anime ranging from Dragon Ball to Assassination Classroom to To Love-Ru to Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Anime fans will probably want to pick this up this fun game!

For those who aren't interested in the new releases or who enjoy saving money, the Big In Japan sale is still going, so if you need a new JRPG, you can probably find one at a great price.

With last week's E3 silence on the PSN, the store has hit back with some solid new releases and an amazing 'Big In Japan' sale. I seriously don't think I've typed up this many game titles anymore. In new release land, Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is promising to add another big chunk of story, new classes and gameplay access to the already huge world of Final Fantasy XIV, making it an ideal time to try XIV if you haven't already. On top of this is the incredible Big In Japan sale, including some truly great games such as Persona 4 Golden, Danganronpa, most of the Final Fantasy series and a good chunk of the Tales series, along with plenty more. This Week's PSN EU/AU PSN Releases, JRPG Style! (12/6/15)

Why hello! Welcome to this week's edition of Europe and Australia's new PSN releases, which pulls each week's PSN additions related to the JRPG genre and other Japanese games into one post for your convenience.

I would say this week is quiet on PSN for JRPGs, mostly due to the new release of Elder Scrolls Online on PS4 possibly sending other releases running. However, if you need a game to play on your Vita, Freedom Wars is currently on sale for a steal and is a uniquely fun game with fun online and offline play. Otherwise there's a little DLC, but not much else to talk about or new to play. ]
I'm not too worried because I'm happily playing Final Fantasy IX, so maybe you should hit your backlog this week too!

This Week's PSN EU/AU PSN Releases, JRPG Style! (5/6/15)

Why hello! Welcome to this week's edition of Europe and Australia's new PSN releases, which pulls each week's PSN additions related to the JRPG genre and other Japanese games into one post for your convenience.

So I must have been living under a rock or something over the last few weeks (or starting a new job), because I somehow completely missed that Steins;Gate was coming to PS3. Steins;Gate is one of my favourite anime ever because of it's deep story about time travel and it's effects on others and the game is meant to delve much deeper into this tale. If you haven't experienced the story, this is supposed to be the best way to do it.

Joining Steins;Gate are Operation Abyss and Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-. I'm definitely excited for Guilty Gear's 2.5D graphics and because I always love an Arc System Works fighting game. Operation Abyss could also be interesting, with it incorporating lots of ideas from other games hopefully in new ways. With these three new releases, I'm pretty happy with this week's selections for JRPG fans and would call this a good week!

This Week's PSN EU/AU PSN Releases, JRPG Style! (9/5/15)

Omega Quintet: The Idol crossover that the JRPG genre was missing?

Why hello! Welcome to this week's edition of Europe and Australia's new PSN releases for JRPG fans. If you're anything like me and have secretly been waiting for the world of music, idols and JRPGs to collide, this week you are in luck because Omega Quintet has finally been released in English for PS4, along with plenty of free DLC and more (I will eventually play my Japanese copy and talk about this game by the way. I just need a TV with an HDMI input :| ). While there are no other new JRPGs this week, Catherine and Child of Light are two critically acclaimed games that are on sale, so if you've been wanting to play either this week may be good!

It is also worth noting that if you have a Playstation Plus subscription, there are some new non-JRPG games for you available for this month, so make sure you pick those up before the end of the month.

Good day good friends, welcome to another week of Playstation Network updates for those who love Japanese RPGs and video games in general!

This week includes the release of the fun old-school platform Sayonara UmiharaKawase+ for PS Vita, a PS4 port and Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo, which appears to be a deep cut as I only stumbled upon by chance when looking at it's corresponding DLC.

You may have noticed no PSN post last week and that was because I couldn't get into the PSN for some reason. From what I've heard there was some sort of maintenance, but PSN wasn't offering any explanation so I just kind of dealt with it. This Week's PSN EU/AU PSN Releases, JRPG Style! (27/3/15)

Hello, hello!

This week's PSN update includes two new releases, including a JRPG dungeon-crawler I've been excited for - the sequel to the Guided Fate Paradox, the Awakened Fate Ultimatum (although...still need to finish the first one). Along with that, there's a some good games on sale right now as Easter is coming up and the PSN does amazing seasonal sales.

My main recommendation for the Easter sale would be Freedom Wars for it's addictive and complex action game mechanics, but there are definitely other good games in there too so check it out, especially if you're a fan of anime games.

Margaret Has Been Confirmed As A Playable Character In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax + Official Release Date and New Japanese Trailers

After rumours surrounding a recent Persona 4 Arena Ultimax poster, Margaret has been confirmed as another playable character for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Players of Persona 4 will remember Margret as the game's Velvet Room resident, who will join her sister, Persona 3's Velvet Room resident Elizabeth in the Persona 4 Arena Ultimax character line-up. Margaret will be available in the game via DLC, though it has not yet been revealed whether she will be free in the first week like the Adachi and Marie DLC.

In the game, Margaret will use the Personas Yoshitsune, Cu Chulainn and Ardha in regular combat and her burst arrack will feature the Persona Lucifer. Here are some photos of Margret in action (courtesy of Famitsu):

Also in recent Persona 4 Arena Ultimax news, the release date for North America has been announced as September 30th. No European date has been announced, meaning that European fans may have to import the game this time around.

(Side note: I will be importing the game from Amazon and trying to get the DLC to work on an Australian Playstation. According to Google, this is possible so if I'm successful, I'll post an article here on how you guys can do it too!)
